Eye movement Densensitization And Reprocessing (EMDR)

“Why EMDR? EMDR works fast, is integrative, doesn’t necessitate prolonged exposure (which can be re-traumatizing), and requires no homework. It activates natural processing capacities of the brain that are frozen and deactivated by trauma. It re-establishes disrupted communication between the brain regions impacted by traumatic experience and enables the traumatized brain to heal.”

EMDR is a powerful, evidenced based therapy that can help you move forward more quickly than as with traditional talk therapy. It is designed to help your brain process and release distressing experiences, memories and associated negative cognitions so they no longer feel overwhelming or intrusive.

Through bilateral eye movements, EMDR allows your mind to reprocess stuck memories, so they lose their emotional intensity and stop interfering with your present life. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to go into detail of what happened in the past.

What is Bilateral Stimulation?

Bilateral stimulation is a core component of EMDR therapy that activates both sides of the body and brain to help reprocess traumatic memories, feelings, thoughts and emotions. Research shows it enhances communication between brain areas involved in memory, thinking, and emotion, facilitating healing.

Commonly, therapists guide eye movements side to side while focusing on a distressing memory. Other methods include alternating auditory tones, tactile buzzers, or tapping, however, studies suggest the eye movements have the most impact.

During EMDR, you identify a negative belief linked to a painful memory and develop a positive replacement. While engaging in bilateral stimulation, you focus on the memory, emotions, and bodily sensations. Periodic pauses allow you to share insights, helping your brain reprocess the experience in a healthier way and reduce emotional distress over time. Eventually, the negative thought will be replaced by the positive cognition and the event will no longer trigger you.

EMDR can help you:

  • Reduce anxiety, stress, and trauma-related symptoms

  • Feel more grounded and less triggered

  • Shift negative beliefs and build self-confidence and self-worth

  • Experience emotional freedom and lasting change

If you’ve tried other types of therapy and still feel weighed down, EMDR might be the missing piece. I’m here to help you explore whether it’s a good fit.
